"David Bowie is" Exhibition

When we are talking about London's nightlife of yesteryear, ones will not be missed are the Punks and also a signature punk icon, David Bowie. The Victoria & Albert Museum has been given an unprecedented access to the David Bowie Archive to curate the first international retrospective of the extraordinary career of David Bowie. More than 300 objects will be brought together for the very first time, e.g. lyrics, fashion, photography etc. The exhibition's concept is derived from David Bowie's famous song "Heroes" and also a book "We Can be Heroes" which has the most detailed account of London's coolest people in nightlife.

The exhibition will start from 23 March and end on 28 July 2013. If you don't have a chance to stop by London for the exhibition, make sure you get a copy of "We Can be Heroes".

Exhibition details

fifth & pacific

In November of last year, Liz Claiborne Inc (parent company who owns Kate Space, Lucky Brand, Juicy Couture, Jack Spade) sold its namesake brand Liz Claiborne to J.C. Penney in aims of turning around its balance sheets and focusing on a brand portfolio that promises growth.Renaming was a unavoidable.

As of May 2012, Liz Claiborne Inc will be known as Fifth & Pacific. The name is meant to reflect the company's reach and its coast to coast design sensibilities "where California cool meets New York chic".

It's reflected in its new logo as well. The seriffed typeface and demure grey of "Fifth" gives it a mature, elegant look, while on the "Pacific" half, the tall sans seriffed typeface in a cool ocean blue gives it a young and fun feel.

It's clean, elegant, pretty, and conceptually a great idea! Yet somehow, put together, it doesn't quite gel. "California Cool" seems to take a precedence over the name as the rest of the logo and textual content is washed out in grey. How the full brand comes alive will have come down to the rest of its applications. We can't wait to see!

karl getting social

Gaming is ubiquitously blended in our daily lives and Karl Lagerfeld just knows this is the way to sustain coverage especially in the younger crowd. Earlier in December by joint forcing with Net-a-Porter, Karl has developed an apps to tease his upcoming collection which is launching on 25 January 2012. Through the game you have to upload your own photo and seek Karl's head logo to access exclusive site content. The incentive is GBP1,000 spending at Net-a-Porter, and Karl could get involved in the game drawing as much user generated content as they could. The campaign is leveraging the social media platform and the extensive global ownership of hand held computers. The result could be a substantial perception shift of the Karl being only a couture brand to gaining the younger crowd's attention and reception.

a date with rag & bone

D.I.Y. rag & bone

For their latest campaign, the boys at Rag & Bone took a different turn and asked their friends, such as Miranda Kerr and Karolina Kurkova, to point the lens - at themselves. Giving them a camera and a bag of clothes, they created a D.I.Y. project and the results are intimate portraits and candid snapshots - exactly the type of thing you don't see in other fashion campaigns.

David and Marcus from Rag & Bone have invited a few of us in Hong Kong to join the mix, and there will be an exhibition of the images in-store at Lane Crawford next week. Stay posted and see how we decided to express ourselves.

SS2012 is the 1st season both Carol Lim and Humberto Leon designed since they have gone on board Kenzo. Do you feel the collection conveys the flavor they cultivate at Opening Ceremony from NY? The color mix is daring, the form is young, it's so refreshing, not all label could generate such a pleasant outlook when they change chief designer. How interesting we see the Asian influence growing stronger and further.

qiu hau

Qiu Hau's design carries a heavy sense of sculpture and form which almost reminds me of Rick Owens, Haider Ackerman and Alexander McQueen. This could be the result of Qiu's study in Central St. Martins earlier. Qiu, originally from Suzhou, has been nominated for Breakthrough Designer this year by WGSN Global Fashion Awards which the result was announced only a week ago, see full winners list here.

I have always been amazed by the speed and achievement Chinese designers have accomplished in China. There are just so many rising stars whose designs and style are global by standard. RICOSTRU is created by Riko Manchit Au who graduated from Italy's Instituto Marangori just this year with both men and women's line is another line to keep our eyes on. The name RICOSTRU originates from the Italian word "ricostruzione" meaning to reconstruct. This collection I like is called "Opened You.", I am waiting for her official website to launch, maybe we can help them?!

in the same vein

If you love Scandinavian design as much as we do, then Vie is a must-stop in Hong Kong. This shop is the first spin-off of Vein — a unique retail space that stocks brands from the Nordic circle — and we are already liking what we see! Continuing the same belief and retail concept, you'll find carefully curated and handpicked selections of laid-back womens and menswear from brands such as Filippa K, Muuto, Marimekko, Won Hundred Men's, Dagmar, Stylein, Kosta Boda and Aarikka, together with character items for home & interior. Most of these brands are not available elsewhere in Hong Kong, so the owners behind Vien and Vie have brought their passion and love for Scandinavia right to Star Street. We couldn't be happier.

Whitespace has built the soon-to-be launched website for Vien, and look forward to their opening celebrations in November. Read what The D'Vine has to say about the shop here or visit Vein & Vie, G/F, 2D Star Street, Wanchai, Hong Kong, tel: +852 2528 4988.

tangram launches at whitespace

Our friends at Tangram launched their Spring/Summer 2012 collection earlier this week at Whitespace. Here are some snaps of the event, which drew a great crowd of friends, buyers and press who gathered around drinking champagne and admiring the pieces on display. Husband and wife team Paola Sinisterra and Ignacio Garcia have worked incredibly hard on this collection, and the love and knowledge for their craft shows in the details, fabrics and prints. Hear more about what fashion-blogger Divia Harilela from The D'Vine says about their launch collection. Until they find a stockist, please order from them directly at

symphony of hong kong

Check out what the style-cats over at Lane Crawford are doing this season with the launch of Lab by Lane Crawford. It all starts off by inviting Marcelo Burlon to create The Symphony of Hong Kong.

Last week, Burlon created this film, where 23 local influencers expressed their individual style in selected lab fashion-brand wardrobes available at Lane Crawford. The cast included local fashion icon Hilary Tsui, stylist Tina Leung, blogger Cindy Ko and designer Philip Chu; as well as creatives Arnault Castel, Danielle Huthart and Kevin Poon. Featured lab brands included Acne, Alexander Wang, Band of Outsiders, Carven, Helmut Lang, IRO, Joseph, Markus Lupfer, McQ, Opening Ceremony, rag & bone, Rick Owens Lilies and Theyskens’ Theory.

Lovely behind the scenes photography of the shoot by Yuman Ng.

pink is punk

To celebrate the expansion of Lane Crawford Canton Road and the launch of “lab by Lane Crawford”, Lane Crawford invited enigmatic Italian maestro and Creative Director Marcelo Burlon to come to Hong Kong and create a video piece featuring 20 of the city's taste-makers, influencers and movers and shakers. The opening party and mayhem begins this evening with "Pink is Party" hosted by Marcelo and his band of mischief-makers. Watch this space for more images of the party and his video, "Symphony of Hong Kong".
