We first came across this brand during our travels to Europe earlier this year, but with distribution across 6,000 shops in 31 countries, we're a little surprised they haven't ventured farther this way.
Established in 1985, the Amsterdam-based menswear label Scotch & Soda has now expanded its family to Maison Scotch for women, and aptly named Scotch Shrunk for kids. Along with launching their first fragrance, Barfly, this season, the menswear A/W 2010 collection continues their 'old school with a spicy twist' in an array of styles and quirky themes such as "Run for the hills", "Workwear Review" and "Homecoming". While Scotch & Soda feels a lot like a Dutch version of Abercrombie & Fitch, the new women's 'la femme selon Marie' is similar to a relaxed APC and not surprisingly draws inspiration from French style. It all looks wearable and workable, and we love the mix of vintage with contemporary, something slouchy with something structured.
We only wished that Hong Kong got cold enough to wear mohair and angora, but looking at their collection, we may bring out our knitted beanies and chunky cardigans. With recently opened outposts in New York City, Madrid, Toronto and Budapest and plans for further expansion in the pipeline, we look forward to the House of Scotch & Soda's dynasty of brands reach this part of the world, hopefully soon!
