meet muuto

Inspired by the Finnish word muutos, means new perspective, Muuto is a brand that is offering something fresh in the form of products. They have a simple, single premise — they "handpick the brightest design talent in Scandinavia and give them the freedom to express their individual story through everyday objects. Some want to alter the world, others find passion in colour and shape and others still, draw deeply from personal experience. How do they see a vase, a lamp or any other everyday product?"

To many of us, Scandinavian design already signifies style and sensibility. with Muuto, we are seeing a new wave of talent reach our doorstep, or desk, or wall. Muuto is available at Flea & Cents and in stores around the world.

fake china

We met Swedish designer Nille Svensson at last year's Icograda conference in Beijing, and was so excited. Not only is a thoughtful speaker and clever graphic designer, it was interesting to see his attention being turned to products - especially one that we are familiar with in this part of the world. Fake China is the result. By exploring and reversing the notion that China is where all the fakes are produced, he goes back to a time when the West was doing the forgery - giving rise to the theme of Orientalism in art.

In producing these classic blue-and-white China plates with a twist, he writes "It is a healthy reminder of how cultural influenses and values shift and change over time. Not only geographically, but economically and demographically, the general presumption that the Western world is where things are designed and originated, whilst the East is where they get produced and copied will not prevail forever." good morning technology

Our friends from Good Morning Technology have been hard at work. Alongside the launch of their new bike product Copenhagen Parts, they've designed a lighting range called Archetype for LUCEPLAN that debuted at the design fair Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2010. We first met Good Morning Technology when partners Mads Kjøller Damkjær and Lars Thomsen visited Whitespace and they've been kind at sharing their latest news with us. With their lamp for Luceplan, they set out to achieve something different. The intentionally archetypical shape and the familiar action of screwing in a bulb accompany the discovery of a light source that is an alternative to incandescent lighting. The action is also a metaphor. Archetype is in fact the combination of source and lamp; “by combining high technology and innovative light diffusion in simple, clean and formal lines, Archetype builds a bridge between before and now…”

The new lamp is the logical continuance of the sustainable path that Luceplan has been taking for some time now: the uninterrupted research into the functionality of lighting devices. In this case, the LEDs are one of the most interesting energy-saving solutions of recent years and they are characterized by long life, high output and no maintenance costs. Besides the lamp GMT also designed a range of armatures to be used.
