the black power mixtape

A film by Göran Hugo Olsson, The Black Power Mixtape is a brilliantly edited montage of lost 16mm footage shot by Swedish photographers in America from 1967-75; combined with audio interviews from some of today's leading African-American artists, activists, musicians and scholars; and set to a music by Grammy-winner Questlove. A special screening at MoMA is being held by our friends over at React to Film

andreas gefeller

Photographer Andreas Gefeller's show at Hasted Kraeutler is a simple exercise in noticing patterns and complexities within simple situations. His "Japan Series" concentrates on the chaotic cluster of telephone poles that are ubiquitous in urban areas. But when digitally stitched together against a stark white and black background, the perspective is distorted and you are not certain if you are looking up or down, close-up or far away. Either way the results make for interesting images. "Andreas Gefeller. The Japan Series" runs from March 31 – May 14, 2011Hasted Kraeutler, 537 West 27th Street, New York, NY 10011
