Sunshine Underground

Hong Kong artist Sun Lui uses acrylic to portray his thinking of human natures and the darkness of the society. Evolving from his early style of pop art, Sun's art style tends to be a collage of psychedelics and surrealism. Since his debut of join exhibition at “Nonstoplism1stAnniversary Art Exhibition” at Fringe Club,  Sun founded "ArtMania" to work with NGOs for the minorities & needy groups in the society.  He is currently working on his solo exhibition, Sunshine Underground with <<The Night in Darkness>> as theme.

make happy those who are near and ...

Stumbled across a blog post with a headline "Make happy those who are near, and those who are far will come." and that attracts me tremendously. The author, Cristina Chapman, attended the Manchester Design Symposium 2012 just 2 weeks ago and got inspired by some key speakers like Adrian Shaughnessy - renowned graphic designer and writer of How to be a graphic designer without losing your soul  and Will Hudson - founder of It's Nice That, but more by Morag Myerscough - founder of Studio Morag. It's quoted "The person who inspired me the most was Morag Myercough, she has been a designer for the past 20 years but only in the last 10 years she has been doing exactly what she believes in." Morag has done a lot of way-finding design and instilled her quirky sense into many valuable organizations such as children's hospital, Deptford project by transforming an unused train into a cafe. It's indeed a life long journey for all designers to explore what truly resonates their dreams and things close to their hearts. Stay truthful and original.


Owl is my favorite bird because they are wise. I now have another reason to love them because Klaus Haapaniemi has done a beautiful job illustrating owl.  Haapaniemi has created prints for Diesel, Clements Ribeiro and Marimekko before establishing his own collection. Klaus is well known for his illustrations, advertising art and clothing fabric prints. He has created a number of fanciful prints for the likes of iittala and Marimekko. The ornamental style of his designs has set a high differentiators from other artists.

google doodles

Google has been creatively and quietly making alternative logos for themselves for over a decade. Typically corporations follow strict brand guidelines, that define the use and limit modifications to preserve the integrity of the logo. Google, however chooses to re-imagine their mark with playful interpretations and doodles now numbering in the thousands. Following Swan Lake, Whitespace has worked on The Hong Kong Ballet's next production, Coppélia. Working with the talented Emilie Sarnel on the artwork, the poster captures the comedic love story of Dr. Coppélius and his life-sized doll. Originally premiered in Paris in 1870, this ballet has captured the imaginations throughout the times. The Hong Kong Ballet performs Coppélia on 23-25 September 2011 at 8.00pm and 24-25 September 2011 at 3.00pm, at Auditorium, Sha Tin Town Hall. Tickets are available through Urbtix.

Hosted in 9 cities, 5 countries, with 164 speakers and over 42,000 attendees, Semi-Permanent - the Conference for Creative People is finally bringing their debut event to Asia, and we proudly announce Hong Kong as the destination! This two-day internationally acclaimed conference is held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 March. Twelve world-renowned speakers, including HK-based artist Simon Birch, Christian Alzmann of Industrial Light & Magic, Grammy award-winning graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister and Fashion photographer of 2009 Kayt Jones etc., will be discussing their work, philosophy and life experiences on creating inspirational art, design and media.

celebrating new traditions

While Whitespace celebrates our 5th anniversary, Lane Crawford celebrates their 160th! They produced a beautiful book, Celebrating New Traditions, which creative manager Sarah Fung presented to me yesterday after a meeting at their offices. We're delighted to be called 'a pioneer of creativity in Hong Kong' and to share our special memories in the opening forward of this edition. scotch and soda, please

scotch-soda_aw2010 We first came across this brand during our travels to Europe earlier this year, but with distribution across 6,000 shops in 31 countries, we're a little surprised they haven't ventured farther this way.


Established in 1985, the Amsterdam-based menswear label Scotch & Soda has now expanded its family to Maison Scotch for women, and aptly named Scotch Shrunk for kids. Along with launching their first fragrance, Barfly, this season, the menswear A/W 2010 collection continues their 'old school with a spicy twist' in an array of styles and quirky themes such as "Run for the hills", "Workwear Review" and "Homecoming". While Scotch & Soda feels a lot like a Dutch version of Abercrombie & Fitch, the new women's 'la femme selon Marie' is similar to a relaxed APC and not surprisingly draws inspiration from French style. It all looks wearable and workable, and we love the mix of vintage with contemporary, something slouchy with something structured.


We only wished that Hong Kong got cold enough to wear mohair and angora, but looking at their collection, we may bring out our knitted beanies and chunky cardigans. With recently opened outposts in New York City, Madrid, Toronto and Budapest and plans for further expansion in the pipeline, we look forward to the House of Scotch & Soda's dynasty of brands reach this part of the world, hopefully soon!
