Echigo Tsumari Art Field 2012

The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial is an international modern art festival held every three years in the rural Echigo-Tsumari region of Niigata Prefecture. Launched in 2000, the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial is a large-scale initiative in Japan seeking to combine art with urban and regional regeneration. It has succeeded to attract visitors and bring awareness to this beautiful region that has suffered from depopulation and a series of natural disasters. There are more than 300 Japanese and international artists' fascinating artworks are exhibited throughout the 760 square kilometer Echigo-Tsumari region. Some of the artworks are found in the town centers and are easy to see, while others are located among remote rice fields and are difficult to access. This art festival is running until September 17, it is a good chance to enjoy the great outdoors while visiting the largest art gallery in the world. The Echigo -Tsumari region is easily accessible from Tokyo in a little over an hour by train!

the big blue

The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium has been one of the best in the world and Kyoto now has just opened a new aquarium 2 weeks ago! The Kyoto Aquarium is the first large scale aquarium that is constructed in the inner continental rather than near the ocean. The 'tank' is huge and nearly 2 storey deep which supports a wide array of marine animals and organisms. There is penguin zone, dolphin area to many other specialized zones showing the magic of the sea world.

beldi the rugs

Who could blend colors better than Moroccan in their rugs? Look at these fantastic rugs brought to you by Beldi - started by a couple from New York and Marrakech. They buy directly from the artisans to ensure fair prices, and they also pledge to donate 20% of all profits to charities in Morocco, like the SOS Children’s Village in Ait Ourir, outside Marrakech where they sponsor a young boy: www.sos-childrensvillages.org

25 Hours

Just staying 1 more hour beyond a day, is that what 25Hours Hotel hoping you would do? 25Hours Hotel is a German chain which congregates 6 hotels locating from Frankfurt, Hamburg to Zurich. Olaf Hajeck is commissioned by 25Hours in designing exclusive illustration to be used throughout the chain aiming to give these accommodation a more distinctive, differentiating and delectable feel. Olaf has worked extensively on different accounts ranging from Apple, Nike, Barney's, Ritz Carlton etc. I long for more well designed yet affordable boutique hotels like the 25Hours as what I see has become more and more homogenized not only in the local district but on a global basis. Does character or personality matter anymore?

Don't you just feel like to have more outdoor music event after going to the Clockenflap earlier? The Laneway Festival is here again and there would be one holding in Singapore next February 12.  In their own words, "The Laneway Festival is about leading new and revered seminal music. The festival has always been interested in finding what's fresh and great and bringing it to unique settings and surrounds to be appreciated by music lovers. The size of the festivals, the locations and the way we encourage community all form part of the way in which the Laneway team strive to present an urban music experience like no other."

crumbs in beijing

Migas in Spanish means crumbs which adds such a humor to this new restaurant in Beijing. The chicken-like logo is inspired by artist Sergio Paredes. The outdoor lounge area really caught my heart as I really love cactus and sitting outside during the autumn breeze with a drinks in hand with your favorite gang, what more could you ask for in life? Cheers!

w insider

We were WOW'd to receive a snapshot from our friends vacationing in the Maldives of the W Insider — a project we worked on with Starwood Hotels for the W Hotels brand. Whitespace conceptualized, designed and edited a broadsheet paper for the brand, filled with images, articles and interviews, that is now distributed throughout the region. So nice to see it in action!

eat pray love

We loved the book but will we love the scents? Fresh comes out with a trio of fragrances based on Elizabeth Gilbert's bestseller, Eat, Pray, Love. One of my favourite scents is their Pomegranate Anise, but it will be interesting to see how they capture her story in these simple fragrances, inspired by three locations, Italy, India and Indonesia.

Julia Roberts stars in the film with the same name, opening on August 13th.

rendez-vous round-up

We ended up in Paris with the CIPHER team on their first showing during Paris Fashion Week at Rendez-Vous Homme. We were given an unusual store-front space on Rue Saint Merri, which we discovered was owned by Pierre Cardin and had his name appearing everywhere. The four days went by in a blur as a great mix of buyers, friends and random strangers walked into the showroom thinking it was a shop and wanting to buy the sneakers. Here are the some of the highlights from the show. Entrance to Rendez-Vous on the 2nd day.

garage turenne

We took a break from our show and checked out nearby Capsule. Tucked away in a garage on Rue de Turenne, we not only found some familiar faces but some fantastic distressed type at the front entrance. capsule_08

Ground floor full of brands and the ubiquitous Vitamin Water.

derriere

Out of all the meals we enjoyed in Paris, Derriere was one of the best we had. Although we took the late seating at 11pm, the berry mojitos and pineapple caiparinhas from next-door Andy Wahloo (with their wonderfully type-set drinks menu!) staved off the hunger and we took turns wandering around the house, looking for the 'smoking room', which was in fact hidden behind a large Narnia-like closet. Derriere, 69, rue des Gravilliers, 75003 Paris+ 33 1 44 61 91 95 Reservations a must!

circus antics

Supper clubs seem to be making a quiet comeback. The latest to open is Circus London, located smack in the centre of Covent Garden. Despite mixed reviews on the Southern-style food, the boudoir-meets-space-ship interiors by Tom Dixon and performances by contortionists with nipple tassles will take your mind off the 20 pound cocktails you'll likely be sipping. Either way we're intrigued by the concept and the candy slickness of the decor and identity.Circus London 27-29 Endell Street, Covent Garden, London
